If you are like most Marylanders, driving will be the most dangerous thing you will do today. Every day in Maryland, there are 276 crashes – nearly three crashes every 15 minutes. More than half of those crashes will seriously injure people.
The goal of the Choose Safety for Life campaign is a goal we can all live with – to reduce traffic crashes – and their resulting fatalities and injuries.
Traffic crashes are no “accident,” they are preventable and predictable. In fact, 93 percent of all traffic crashes are caused by driver error.
How can YOU prevent Maryland’s next crash?
Before you get behind the wheel ask yourself a few questions:
- Did I fasten my seat belt and make sure all of my passengers buckle up, too?
- Have I had a drink or taken any substances, including medicines, that might impair my driving ability?
- Am I too tired to be driving?
- Will I be distracted by the radio, cell phone, passengers or eating?
- Am I feeling too angry or upset to drive? Am I running late and anxious to reach my destination?
- Am I at my most alert and ready to share the road with pedestrians, cyclists, and large trucks?
What can YOU do?
- TALK to people about it – save a life by making people more aware of traffic safety and the deadly consequences of not making the right choices.
Maryland is working hard to reduce traffic crashes through four major areas:
(Partners integrate all E’s in the Strategic Highway Safety Plan).
Choose safety for life, adds another “E” – everyone. You.
